English version of the article from the regional newspaper Le Républicain Lorrain :

"Avon: The forgotten company closure

The cosmetics manufacturer is shutting down its French operations. In Lorraine, in northern-eastern France, 160 people sell its products.

This may be the biggest redundancy plan that has ever happened in France, but no one seems to be worried about it. The thing is Avon’s 11,000 representatives do not have an employment contract. They go door-to-door and sell the American cosmetic products. However, the resulting loss of income—the best sellers earn the equivalent of a salary—can be compared to firing. The only difference is that these people won’t have a severance package.
Last Monday, the 127 employees of Avon France learned that the American cosmetics giant was planning to close its French subsidiary, which has been in deficit for a long time. Yolande Lang, a zone manager in charge of the Lorraine region, who lives in Woippy, said : “We know it’s going to happen, that’s for sure, but we just don’t know when”. She is responsible for the orders of 160 representatives.
According to Mrs Lang, who has worked for Avon for 23 years, the sales have plummeted for four or five years. “But we’ve never thought the company would close like that”, she said.
Françoise, who lives in Semécourt, another township of the region, is one of these representatives for whom Avon is a second source of income, “between €50 and €150”, depending on the month. “I’ve done that for 31 years, so it’s a hard blow”, she said.
Avon, a brand known by everyone, has a well-oiled system. The representatives often sell the products to their family or friends, with margins that go from 23 to 46%, according to their results. They don’t have to pay in advance when they order the products. They deliver the products, get paid, and then give the money. With a 0.2% market share, Avon has never managed to break through in the home country of L’Oréal (24.6%) and Yves Rocher (4.7%). The company has been run by a legal officer since May, following the Bobigny Commercial Court’s decision. The financial situation is so difficult that the liquidation could be decided, after the company declares itself insolvent on the 23rd of October. Yesterday morning, the company’s carrier decided to exercise its right of retention on the orders until the situation is cleared up.“In two years and a half, I’m going to retire. I don’t know what I’m going to do”, Yolande Lang said. Like many, she feels betrayed by Avon, a company that has always insisted on the importance of human values.Julien BÉNÉTEAU. "
